The Outer Hebrides- our biggest adventure yet!

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

This Easter, the children and I travelled to The Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides, and we did it in a bigger van that we had only owned for a week! Crazy!

We spent two weeks on the road- our longest trip since first becoming 'vanlifers' in 2021, before my husband flew into The Isle of Barra in a tiny plane to drive us home. Such a fantastic adventure, one I will never forget.

I plan to write a series of blog posts about our trip, including itineraries for the whole journey and for each islands individually, hints and tips for travelling these remote islands, and how I did this solo. At times this adventure was testing and I considered coming home early, but I am so glad that we stuck at it- the western isles are incredible, I'd have been so sad not to have seen them all!

The wildlife on the islands is out of this world, we saw highland cows in so many locations (I will share these with you in a separate post), who knew that these beauties came in different colours?!

We saw various birds of prey including golden and white tailed eagles, oyster catchers and heron.

We found the most amazing spot to watch seals play in the water and bask on rocks in the sun, and we also had the pleasure of watching sea otters wrestle on the sands and run back into the water!

I am so proud of the children for coping brilliantly with all of our travelling and for being so helpful. Of course, they had their moments of challenging behaviour, but what van life adventure doesn't?

I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and well beyond my own limits, many times during this trip and I am so happy to hear that many of you have been inspired by this journey.

I have lots to share and I hope that it is useful. If you are thinking of taking a trip to The Outer Hebrides in the future, you definitely should!

Thanks for reading,

Hollie x
